Farm History & Development

A journey of sustainable transformation and organic growth

How it started

Background story

Francisca and Evert Jan have both been involved in organic farming since childhood. Francisca comes from a farming family and is a trained agriculturist. Evert Jan studied agriculture in Gouda, the Netherlands. He grew up in rural Netherlands, and has always worked in the food producing sector. At first, we wanted to produce healthy food for ourselves to avoid having to purchase food with pesticide residues at the market.

2010

Farm Establishment

The property originally belonged to Francisca Maghuyop, the late wife of the owner. Together, they pursued sustainable farming and adopted zero chemical use with sustainable soil management practices.

2011 – 2013

Annual Visits from Europe

Annual visits to the property from Europe were conducted during holidays for tasks such as installing fencing and maintaining or repairing the main residential house.

2014

Permanent Return

In 2014, the return to the farm became permanent. Measures addressing soil erosion included terracing and directing rainwater using canals. Attention was given to developing various ecological zones within the area.

2015 – 2017

Infrastructure Development

Farm improvements include a 25-meter well with a pump, a 75m³ water tank, and three water sources: the well, rainwater harvesting, and municipal supply. Garden plots and fruit trees were added, compost facilities installed, and multiple trainings held for local farmers.

October 15, 2017

Memorial

Francisca Maghuyop passed away.

2018

Continued Development

Evert Jan stayed at the farm, promoting sustainable agriculture. A small greenhouse with drip irrigation was built, more trainings were held, and solar power was added. Part of the land was replanted with native Philippine flora. By year's end, Evert Jan began a new relationship with Analou Suan.

2019

Aquaponics & Security

The farm added an aquaponics system with tilapia, supplying fresh fish, vegetables, and herbs. The sustainable system runs on solar power with minimal input. Six CCTV cameras were installed across the property.

2020 - 2022

Covid Period

Continued farm development confirms that our sustainable approach is effective, as seen in the soil's response. During the pandemic, we relied on our produce for personal consumption, proving the concept.

2022 - 2025

Recognition & Growth

Sinacaban Ecofarm gains wider recognition, attracting repeat customers such as Le Bistro, Dakak Beach Resort, Koi Garden Cafe, and various personal contacts. Visitors request farm tours, attend full-day workshops, or observe sustainable soil management practices. We built a strong relationship with local honey hunters in Mount Malindang National Park. Our lab tests the honey, which is then bottled at our farm's Honey House. "Honest Honey" is now a recognised brand among friends.
